  11.        Your copy of Netscape Media Server requires a software
  12.        license in order to operate.  This chapter defines some
  13.        important software licensing terms, describes the basic
  14.        procedure for obtaining, installing, and testing a software
  15.        license for Netscape Media Server, and lists addresses and
  16.        phone numbers that you can use to contact Silicon Graphics
  17.        License Administration.

  19.        For more information about software licenses, see the _F_L_E_X_l_m
  20.        _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e, which provides detailed information on using
  21.        and administering software licenses.  It is included in the
  22.        system software documentation; the online version is in the
  23.        subsystem _l_i_c_e_n_s_e__e_o_e._b_o_o_k_s._F_L_E_X_l_m__U_G.

  25.        8.1  _A__F_e_w__D_e_f_i_n_i_t_i_o_n_s
  26.  
  27.        A _s_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _l_i_c_e_n_s_e is a collection of information that,
  28.        after installation, allows you to use a licensed software
  29.        product on one or more systems.  The software license
  30.        information includes the license type, the license
  31.        expiration date, a license password, system host name, and
  32.        host ID number (_l_m_h_o_s_t_i_d), and additional information
  33.        concerning the license and licensed software.  You can find
  34.        the host name using the command /sbin/uname -n, and the host
  35.        ID number using the command /usr/sbin/lmhostid.  The license
  36.        must be installed on the system that has the host name
  37.        included in the software license information.  If the host
  38.        name is ``ANY,'' the software license can be installed on
  39.        any system.

  41.        There are two types of software licenses, _n_o_d_e-_l_o_c_k_e_d and
  42.        _c_o_n_c_u_r_r_e_n_t, and two durations of software licenses,
  43.        _t_e_m_p_o_r_a_r_y and _p_e_r_m_a_n_e_n_t:
  44.  
  45.        node-locked  A node-locked license is installed on a
  46.                     particular system (node) and allows the
  47.                     licensed software to run on that system.
  48.  
  49.        concurrent   A concurrent license allows the licensed
  50.                     software to run on one or more systems in the
  51.                     network simultaneously.  The number of systems
  52.                     (nodes) allowed is included in the software
  53.                     license information.  The system on which a
  54.                     concurrent license is installed must be
  55.                     configured as a license server.  (See Chapter 1
  56.                     of the _F_L_E_X_l_m _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e for more information
  57.                     about license servers.)

  74.        temporary    A temporary license allows you to use the
  75.                     licensed software for a short period, typically
  76.                     a week to several months.  The expiration date
  77.                     tells you the last date on which you can use
  78.                     the licensed software.  Temporary licenses are
  79.                     often shipped with software so that you can use
  80.                     the software before a permanent license is
  81.                     issued.

  83.        permanent    A permanent license allows you to use this
  84.                     release of the licensed software for a long
  85.                     time.  Permanent licenses are issued only for
  86.                     software that has been purchased.

  88.        8.2  _O_b_t_a_i_n_i_n_g__a_n_d__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__a__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e__L_i_c_e_n_s_e

  90.        This section explains the procedure for obtaining and
  91.        installing a software license:  checking to see if you have
  92.        received software license information, determining if you
  93.        need to install a license, requesting software license
  94.        information if you need it, identifying the system on which
  95.        you will install the license, installing the software
  96.        license information, and verifying that the license is
  97.        working.

  99.          1.  Check to see if you have received software license
  100.              information.
  101.  
  102.              Software license information is distributed in several
  103.              ways:  on labels attached to a Software License
  104.              Registration card, on sheets of paper included with
  105.              the product, or by news, FAX, electronic news, or via
  106.              the World Wide Web.
  107.  
  108.          2.  Determine if you need to install a software license.
  109.  
  110.              You may or may not need to install a software license
  111.              for Netscape Media Server:
  112.  
  113.                 +o If you are simply updating your system to this
  114.                   release of Netscape Media Server, you may not
  115.                   need to install a new license at this time; your
  116.                   already-installed Media 1.0 license will continue
  117.                   to work.
  118.  
  119.                 +o If you have received both a temporary license and
  120.                   a permanent software license, install the
  121.                   permanent license; do not install the temporary
  122.                   license.

  140.                 +o If you have received a permanent license, you
  141.                   should install it because it enables you to use
  142.                   the software that you have purchased.

  144.                 +o If concurrent licenses are used at your site and
  145.                   you plan to use an already-installed license, you
  146.                   can install and use the licensed software on your
  147.                   system without installing a license.
  148.  
  149.                 +o If you have received a temporary software license
  150.                   but do not need to use the software immediately,
  151.                   you may choose to wait to install a license until
  152.                   you obtain the permanent license.
  153.  
  154.          3.  Request a software license if you don't have a
  155.              software license at all, or if you have a temporary
  156.              license and need a permanent license.
  157.  
  158.              To obtain a software license, fill out the Software
  159.              License Registration card that was included with the
  160.              software (or the replica in the _F_L_E_X_l_m _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e).
  161.              Send the information or the card by electronic news
  162.              (preferred), FAX, or news to Silicon Graphics License
  163.              Administration or your local service provider (see the
  164.              next section for addresses).  After your request is
  165.              received by Silicon Graphics or your local service
  166.              provider, you should receive a software license within
  167.              two business days.

  169.          4.  Identify the system on which you will install the
  170.              software license.
  171.  
  172.              Because software license information usually must be
  173.              installed on a particular system, follow these
  174.              guidelines:
  175.  
  176.                 +o Use the /sbin/uname -n command to identify the
  177.                   system on which the license is intended to be
  178.                   used.
  179.  
  180.                 +o If the sysinfo is ``ANY,'' you can install the
  181.                   license on any system you choose.
  182.  
  183.                 +o If the host name included with the software
  184.                   license information doesn't match the host name
  185.                   of the system on which you want to install the
  186.                   license, contact Silicon Graphics License
  187.                   Administration.

  189.          5.  Install the software license (temporary or permanent).

  206.              Check the ``license type'' listed in the software
  207.              license information to find out whether the license is
  208.              a node-locked license or a concurrent license.  The
  209.              installation procedure depends on the license type:
  210.  
  211.                 +o If you are installing a node-locked license, use
  212.                   the _L_i_c_e_n_s_e_M_a_n_a_g_e_r(1M) tool.  You can bring up
  213.                   LicenseManager by choosing ``License Manager''
  214.                   from the System toolchest.
  215.  
  216.                 +o If the license is a concurrent license, you may
  217.                   need to configure the system on which you plan to
  218.                   install the license as a license server.  (See
  219.                   Chapter 1 of the _F_L_E_X_l_m _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e for more
  220.                   information about license servers.)

  222.          6.  Verify that the software license has been successfully
  223.              installed.
  224.  
  225.              To verify that the software license is working, try
  226.              starting the Media server either through
  227.              /_e_t_c/_i_n_i_t._d/_n_s__m_e_d_i_a _s_t_a_r_t or from the Netscape
  228.              administration server GUI.
  229.  
  230.              If you installed a temporary license and you are
  231.              entitled to a permanent license, replace the temporary
  232.              license with a permanent license as soon as possible
  233.              to ensure uninterrupted use of netscape Media server.
  234.  
  235.        8.3  _C_o_n_t_a_c_t_i_n_g__S_i_l_i_c_o_n__G_r_a_p_h_i_c_s__L_i_c_e_n_s_e__A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n
